“So, you grew up here,” she asked, picking at the grilled shrimp appetizer that she had decided on for dinner. Ted had opted for the pork chop, which looked so good that she had been tempted to steal a bite.

“In Sugar Cove, yes,” he told her. “And what made y’all move here?”

Reece didn’t want to go there, not on a first date. “My mom needed a change. Turned out we all did.”

“That’s right.” He took a bite of pork chop and moaned. “You sure you don’t want some?”

“No thanks.”

“It’s delicious,” he told her, waving around a piece that was stuck to his fork. “You’re missing out.”

“Sure. Okay.”

“I knew you were dying for a bite. You’ve been eyeing my plate ever since it arrived.”

She smiled and speared the bite he pushed onto her plate with her fork. The meat practically melted when it hit her tongue.

“Oh, wow. That is good.”

“See? I told you.” Their gazes collided, and Reece found herself falling again. He must’ve felt it too, the gravity that was pulling them together. He smiled. “Now, what were we talking about? Looking at you makes me forget things.”

“Stop it.”

“I’m serious.” He snapped his fingers. “That’s right. We were discussing you leaving med school.”

“No, we weren’t.”

“We almost were,” he teased, dimple indenting his cheek. “And how you gave up the life of a highfalutin doctor to become a baker at your mama’s café.”

She laughed. “Did you really just say ‘highfalutin’?”

“I did. Is there something wrong with that term?”

“Only that it’s a thousand years old.”

“Don’t you know what’s old is new again?” He smiled and it was contagious. Reece grinned too, her mouth pushing so far up toward her eyes that her face hurt. “If you don’t want to talk about it, we don’t have to.”

“There’s really nothing else to say. I like where I am now. I don’t know how long it’ll last or if I’ll decide I want my own place, but for now, while I figure things out, it’s good.”

He wiped his hands on his napkin and settled it beside the plate. “It’s good to have a job where you’re busy, one that keeps you moving.”

“It is.” She frowned. “But you don’t work your bar anymore, do you?”

“Not really. I manage it, go in every day and look at the books, but at some point I’m going to sell it.”

“Why?”

“I don’t want Hadley to see me working at a bar, for that to be how she grows up.”

Her heart tightened for how thoughtful Ted was. “You don’t think it’s moral or something?”

“Let’s just say, I wouldn’t want my kid to be at my workplace on a Friday or Saturday night. It’s a bar. People drink. It can get rowdy.” He pointed his finger toward her. “But I’m not ungrateful for all that it’s allowed me to do and become—which is a better man than I was before.”

She cocked her head, intrigued. “What do you mean?”

“Before I bought that place, I was responsible but still immature. Then when Hadley’s mother realized that she was expecting, I buckled down and worked hard to build it into what it is today.
